Death Certification – Medical Examiners Service

The Medical Examiners Service is being implemented into General Practice.

The Medical Examiner is a national system being implemented by NHS England and Improvement throughout England and Wales. It gives relatives a single point of contact, checks for accuracy of the death certification and provides independent scrutiny following the death of a patient. Medical

Examiners are independent, senior doctors who work closely with their Medical Examiner’s Officers who will guide you through the next practical steps. East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust is our local Medical Examiner’s service and the go live date is on the 23 January 2024

What to expect?

  • A phone call from a Medical Examiner’s Officer or Medical Examiner
  • To be informed of what has been listed as the cause of death
  • The chance to ask questions, raise concerns, or give feedback
  • The Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (what you need in order to register a death
    formally) to be emailed directly to East Sussex Registrar immediately following your phone
    call
